South

It doesn’t get any better than this!

The southern corner of the Western Catskills includes the larger towns of Deposit and Hancock, complimented by small river towns like East Branch, Harvard, Hale Eddy, Fishes Eddy, Shinhopple, on up to Downsville.   It boasts the meeting of the east and west branches of the Delaware River, as well as the Pepacton Reservoir and lays just below the Cannonsville Reservoir – making it a mecca for fly fishing. The Cannonsville will be open for paddling from Memorial weekend to Columbus weekend by permit. Download our brochure here.  Hancock is the start of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway which extends south mostly along Rt. 97. Fishing ponds like Trout Pond, up Russell Brook, are great spots to spend the afternoon sitting on the bank. The rivers are steeped in the history of the region when hemlock timber used to flow down the rivers to the tanning factories. The rivers are now used to float fishing boats and canoes, while anglers test their skills on the waters. Campgrounds line the river banks, and cabin rentals abound. Fishing stores and guides will help you pick out the right gear and take you to great spots to test your skills. Fishing is a year-round sport here, so get your permit and get out there and fish!

But if the fish aren’t biting, try hiking the hundreds of acres of state lands or snowmobiling old logging roads. Bear Spring State Park covers 7,100 acres and is the only state park in New York intended specifically for horseback riding with 24 miles of trails, 24 horse tie stalls, trailer parking station and 41 tent and trailer sites. Part of the Finger Lakes Trail System crosses through the Catskills here.  And if the weather is keeping you inside, there’s plenty of relaxing restaurants to hang out in and listen to stories of the big ones that got away!
